Software is a set of instruction written by programmers to direct computers, including Smartphones on how to carry out all the Operational activities or specific task of computer.

For computer functioning system that directs computer on how to carry out a specific task, we say Application Software (which in short pronunciation is ‘App’). For the one that directs computer on how to carry out all its operational activities, we say Operating System (OS) Software.

For types, OS varies depending on different types of computer based on physical Size. For instance, Desktop and Laptop computers are using Windows, Mac, UNIX, etc. However, Smartphones are using Windows, Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Bada, Symbia, etc.

For branding, today, Smartphones are branded based on the names of their Operating Systems (OSs). For instance, calling a Smartphone an Android Phone, does not mean that the brand name of the Phone is ‘Android’, but it simple means that the OS directing all activities of that phone is Android. So the brand name of the phone may be Tecno, Samsung, HTC, Lenovo, etc. The same to iPhones, which is built with iOS.

The truth is that most of the companies, which owned the OSs are not the manufacturers of the Smartphones. For examples, iOS owns by Apple Inc., Android owns by Google, Bada owns by Samsung, Windows by Microsoft Inc., and BlackBerry OS owned by RIM. Although, choosing OS should be of choice. For instance, some like Android, while some like iOS, which is used in producing iPhones, but it is always good to buy a higher version. For example, we have Android 5 for Lollipop, 6 for Marshmallow and 7 for Nougat. So your Smartphone as “Android phone” for example, is not based on manufacturer, but on OS, and this is why you have Android phones in Tecno, Samsumg, Lenovo, Oppsson, and others.

However, understand that two different OS cannot use the same App. For example, the “WhatsApp App” uses for Android phones is different from that of iPhones, although they share the same functionality. So do not receive App from any smartphone, whose OS is not the same with your own. In addition, the best place to download App is your App store. (you can verify your play store here).

Lets take a case of Android version, so see How to Check the Android OS and Version.

  1. Open your phone’s menu with the menu button. Select “System Settings.”
  2. Scroll down towards the bottom of the menu.
  3. Select the “About phone” option.

4. Check the number under “Android version.” The two numbers listed there (for example: “4.3”) indicate your phone’s version. This will help you know the functional limit of your Smartphone relatively to some updated Apps.
